A speedskater is an athlete who competes in speed skating, a competitive form of ice skating in which skaters race each other in speed on a long or short track. Speed skating requires a blend of speed, endurance, and tactical skill. The sport has two main disciplines: long track and short track.

Long track speed skating takes place on a 400-meter oval track. Skaters compete individually against the clock, with their times determining their ranking. This discipline emphasizes raw speed and stamina over long distances. Competitions are typically held over various distances, from 500 meters to 10,000 meters, and include mass start events.

Short track speed skating, on the other hand, is contested on a smaller rink, typically 111.11 meters in circumference. Skaters compete in heats with multiple athletes on the ice simultaneously. This format is characterized by close-quarters racing, frequent lead changes, and strategic passing. Distances in short track range from 500 meters to 3,000 meters, with relay races also being a prominent event.

Speedskaters wear specialized equipment, including aerodynamic suits and sharply bladed skates designed for speed and control on ice. The training regimen for speedskaters is rigorous, involving extensive on-ice practice, off-ice conditioning, and attention to nutrition and recovery. The sport demands significant cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and mental fortitude. International competitions, such as the Winter Olympic Games and World Championships, are the pinnacle events for speedskaters.
