The term "spam" itself is widely believed to originate from a Monty Python sketch where the word "spam" repeatedly drowns out other dialogue, analogous to how spam messages can overwhelm legitimate communication.

The practice of sending spam has existed since the early days of the internet, with the first recorded spam email sent in 1978. As email became more prevalent, so did the volume of spam. While some spam messages are harmless advertisements, many pose significant security risks. Phishing emails, for instance, attempt to trick recipients into revealing personal information such as passwords or credit card numbers. Malware can be distributed through attachments or malicious links within spam messages, infecting the recipient's computer.

Various methods are employed to combat spam, including spam filters on email servers and clients, sender reputation systems, and user-reported spam flags.
