Sosiaalidemokraattinen is a Finnish adjective meaning “social-democratic.” It is used to describe ideologies, parties, policies, and movements that aim to combine a democratic political system with a welfare-oriented, egalitarian economy. Social democracy generally supports a mixed economy with market mechanisms tempered by extensive social welfare programs, progressive taxation, and strong labor rights, all pursued through parliamentary democracy rather than revolutionary means.

Historically, social democracy emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from the labor movement and reformist socialist currents. The Finnish SDP has been a major force in national politics, frequently participating in center-left coalitions and advocating welfare-state policies, workers’ rights, and social equality. In the European context, social-democratic parties are generally aligned within transnational groups such as the Party of European Socialists, promoting a shared commitment to democratic governance and social policy reform.
