Models vary: the traditional waterfall model follows a linear sequence; iterative and incremental approaches allow repeating cycles and refinements; Agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban emphasize collaboration, short iterations, and adaptability; DevOps seeks closer alignment between development and operations and emphasizes automation and continuous delivery.

Roles involved typically include product owners or business analysts, software architects, developers, testers or quality assurance professionals, operations or DevOps engineers, and user experience designers. Teams coordinate through planning meetings, standups, reviews, and retrospectives, depending on the methodology. Deliverables commonly include a requirements specification, architecture and design documents, source code, build and deployment scripts, test plans and cases, and user documentation. Deliverables may be accompanied by performance goals, security requirements, and compliance checklists.

Software development spans web, mobile, desktop, embedded, and enterprise systems, and employs a wide range of programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Common challenges include managing scope changes, balancing speed and quality, addressing technical debt, integrating components, ensuring security, and meeting regulatory or industry standards. Ethical and societal considerations, such as privacy and accessibility, increasingly shape development practices.
