A softstarter is an electrical device used to reduce inrush current and mechanical stress when starting an AC motor by gradually applying voltage to the motor terminals. It replaces a direct-on-line start with a controlled voltage ramp, allowing the motor to accelerate smoothly to full speed.

Most softstarters are solid-state devices based on thyristors (SCRs) or triacs. In a three-phase application, the device forms a controlled bridge that limits the initial current to a programmed percentage of the motor's full-load current and then increases the voltage in a defined ramp. A bypass contactor may connect the motor directly to the supply once the ramp is complete. Modern units may include microprocessor-based control, external start/stop signals, and built-in protection.

Benefits include reduced electrical peak demand and voltage dips, decreased torsional stress on drive trains, longer motor life, and smoother acceleration compared with direct-on-line starts. They are commonly used for fans, pumps, conveyors, and other applications where high starting torque is not required and full speed control is not necessary.

Limitations and considerations: softstarters only affect starting performance and do not provide continuous speed control or energy savings during operation as a variable-frequency drive would. They dissipate heat during starting and must be sized for the motor’s starting current and torque requirements. Protection features such as overload, phase loss, and short-circuit detection are typical, and proper coordination with the motor protection scheme is essential.

Softstarters come in various configurations, including simple fixed-ramp units and programmable models that allow adjustment of ramp time, initial torque, and peak torque. They are widely used where simple, reliable speed management during start is desired, offering a cost-effective alternative to more complex drives.
