Socialdemokratiska is a Swedish adjective used to describe social democracy or social democratic movements, parties, or policies. In Swedish discourse it is closely associated with the Swedish Social Democratic Party (Sveriges socialdemokratiska arbetareparti), commonly referred to as the Social Democrats, and with policies grounded in this ideology. Internationally, the term is used to classify parties and positions that pursue reform through democratic means rather than revolution.

Social democracy is a political ideology that seeks to combine representative democracy with a welfare state and robust workers’ rights. It supports market economies tempered by state intervention, progressive taxation, universal public services such as health care and education, and strong social protections designed to reduce inequality. The aim is to achieve social justice and broad participation within a capitalist framework, rather than abolishing capitalism.

Historically, social democracy emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a reformist alternative to revolutionary socialism. After World War II, social democratic movements played a central role in building extensive welfare states and mixed economies in many European countries, including the Nordic model with high levels of public provision and collective bargaining. In the late 20th century, some parties adopted more market-friendly or “third way” approaches while retaining universal social protections.

In Sweden, “socialdemokratiska” frequently refers to policies associated with the Socialdemokraterna, emphasizing full employment, universal health care, publicly funded education, and strong labour-market institutions. The term is also used in other countries to describe parties or programs aligned with social democracy, distinct from democratic socialism or other leftist currents.
