Slatework is the craft and industry involved in producing and installing slate material for construction and art. It encompasses quarrying, fabricating, finishing, and fitting slate for roofs, floors, walls, cladding, and regional objects such as memorial tablets and blackboards. Slatework is characterized by the use of slate’s natural cleavage to produce thin, durable sheets.

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from clay or volcanic ash, with slaty cleavage that splits into flat sheets. It is resistant to fire, has low water absorption, and comes in colors ranging from gray and blue-gray to green, purple, and black. The thickness commonly ranges from 3 to 6 millimeters for roofing; thicker varieties are used for flooring and paving.

Traditional slatework relies on riven (naturally split) slate for a matte finish and irregular edges; modern products include sawn or treated slates for uniform surfaces. Production involves quarrying, separating blocks, and splitting along cleavages. Installation for roofs uses battens and matching courses, with copper or corrosion-resistant nails; for floors and walls, panels or tiles are laid with mortar or adhesive. Fixing methods vary by region.

Applications include roofing, exterior cladding, interior and exterior floors, stair treads, paving, and blackboards. Slate roofs are valued for durability (often many decades), fire resistance, and low maintenance, while slate floors offer long life and a distinctive appearance.

Slatework has a long history in areas with slate quarries, such as Wales, Spain, and parts of Italy, and it remains part of traditional restoration projects. Environmental considerations include quarrying impacts and reclamation; modern slate products emphasize recycled content and responsible sourcing.
