A slaapzak is a portable, self-contained sleeping bag designed to provide warmth during sleep in outdoor or unheated environments. It is used for camping, backpacking, scouting and other outdoor activities. The Dutch term translates literally as sleep-bag.

Most slaapzakken come in two main shapes: a rectangular model that offers space and comfort for movement, and a mummy-shaped model that tapers toward the feet to reduce heat loss. The outer shell is typically made of nylon or polyester, with a lining of the same materials. Insulation can be natural down or synthetic fibers; down is light and compressible, while synthetic insulation performs better when damp and is generally more affordable. Many sleeping bags carry a temperature rating according to the European EN 13537 standard, which specifies a comfort temperature, a lower-limit temperature, and an extreme temperature.

Usage and care guidelines emphasize selecting a bag appropriate for the climate, keeping it dry, and using a liner for extra warmth if needed. After use, the bag should be aired out and stored loosely in a large sack rather than kept compressed for long periods, and it should be washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions with a mild detergent.

In the Netherlands, the slaapzak is common equipment for campers, scouts and youth hosts, reflecting its role as standard outdoor gear. It is available in a wide range of materials, weights and temperature ratings to suit different environments and activities.
