Scouts is a term with several related uses. In general, it refers to people who observe, gather information, and report findings. In military and security contexts, scouts are trained to reconnoiter terrain, assess enemy or threat conditions, and navigate using maps and compasses. They aim to move discreetly, reduce risk, and communicate intelligence to others. The verb “to scout” also describes the act of searching for something or someone, including talent, opportunities, or resources.

In civilian life, “scouts” most often denotes members of youth organizations that use outdoor adventure and service to develop character and leadership. The best-known examples are the global Scout movement and its national branches, such as the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides/Girl Scouts. The modern Scouting movement began in the early 20th century when Robert Baden-Powell published Scouting for Boys after a successful camp on Brownsea Island in 1907. Programs emphasize outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship, teamwork, and service. Members typically pledge a promise or oath and follow a law or code, progress through ranks, earn merit badges, and participate in community projects and camping.

Globally, two international umbrella bodies coordinate national Scouts organizations: the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) for traditional Scouts and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) for Guides and Girl Scouts. The term is also used in other contexts, such as talent scouts in sports and entertainment, or scouts employed by businesses to identify opportunities or markets.
