Skyggsglasögon is the Swedish term for sunglasses—eyewear with tinted lenses designed to reduce sun glare and protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation. They are used outdoors in everyday life, sports, driving, and leisure, particularly in bright sunlight or conditions with high glare.

Lenses and coatings come in several varieties. Traditional tinted lenses reduce overall brightness and may be gray, brown, or other hues. Polarized lenses filter glare reflected from horizontal surfaces such as water or roads. Photochromic lenses adjust their tint in response to light levels, becoming darker outdoors and lighter indoors. Materials and construction vary. Lenses are often made from polycarbonate or CR-39 plastic, chosen for impact resistance and light weight. Frames can be metal, plastic, or composite materials, with designs ranging from wraparound sport styles to classic, lightweight frames. Fit and sizing, including lens width and temple length, influence comfort and protection.

Protection and safety follow regulatory standards in many regions. Sunglasses sold in the European Union and other markets typically carry an indication of UV protection (often UV400) and may bear CE markings or other certifications. It is recommended to choose sunglasses that provide full UV protection and suit the wearer’s face shape and activities.

Care and maintenance involve regular cleaning with a microfiber cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, and storing in a protective case to preserve coatings and lens integrity.
