Skumstrukturer, often referred to as foams, are materials consisting of a solid phase with a dispersed gas phase. This structure results in a low density and often imparts unique physical and mechanical properties. The gas is typically distributed as bubbles within a continuous solid matrix. The morphology of these bubbles, whether they are closed-cell (individual bubbles completely enclosed by the solid) or open-cell (bubbles interconnected), significantly influences the material's characteristics.

In open-cell foams, the interconnected pores allow for the passage of fluids and gases, making them suitable for applications like filters, sponges, and acoustic insulation. Their high surface area to volume ratio is also a key feature. Closed-cell foams, conversely, are generally more rigid and provide excellent thermal and acoustic insulation due to the trapped gas, preventing heat and sound transfer. They are often used in structural components and buoyancy applications.

The production of skumstrukturer can be achieved through various methods. Foaming agents, which decompose or react to release gas during processing, are commonly employed. Physical foaming, using gases like carbon dioxide or nitrogen, is another technique. The solid matrix can be composed of polymers, metals, ceramics, or even composite materials, leading to a wide range of foam types with diverse applications across industries such as packaging, automotive, construction, and aerospace.
