Skinmucosa refers to the transitional region where cutaneous skin meets mucous membranes at mucocutaneous junctions. These interfaces occur around the lips (vermilion border), the oral cavity, the eyelids and conjunctiva, the nasal and genital regions, and the anus. The term emphasizes the continuity between two distinct epithelial environments that share functional demands such as protection, moisture, and flexibility.

Histologically, skin and mucosa differ in their epithelia and underlying tissues. Skin typically features keratinized stratified squamous epithelium with a dermis rich in connective tissue, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands. Mucosal surfaces are usually non-keratinized or lightly keratinized stratified squamous epithelium supported by a lamina propria. At the junction, there is a transitional zone where epithelial characteristics blend, and glands and other structures contribute to moisture and lubrication on the mucosal side.

Functionally, the skinmucosa interface provides a flexible barrier that resists mechanical stress while supporting moisture exchange and immune defense. The mucosal side is often moist and more susceptible to irritation, infection, or autoimmune processes, making mucocutaneous junctions common sites for disease such as pemphigus vulgaris, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and other blistering or inflammatory conditions. Wound healing and immune responses at these junctions can differ from purely cutaneous or purely mucosal sites.

In clinical practice, the concept is discussed as mucocutaneous junctions rather than a single anatomical structure. Recognizing the skinmucosa interface is important across dermatology, dentistry, and otolaryngology, where junctional pathology or irritation can affect function and appearance at the lips, oral mucosa, eyelids, and other contact zones.
