In biology, junctional describes cell junctions, the specialized membrane structures that connect adjacent cells and regulate adhesion, communication, and movement of substances. These form junctional complexes at the apical region of epithelial and other tissues, maintaining tissue integrity and controlling paracellular transport.

Medical and dental contexts include conditions and tissues named for their location at a tissue boundary. Junctional epidermolysis bullosa is a hereditary blistering disorder caused by defects in basement membrane components or hemidesmosomes, leading to fragility at the dermoepidermal junction. Junctional nevus refers to a mole whose nests are located at the dermoepidermal junction. Junctional epithelium is the gingival tissue that attaches the tooth to the surrounding structure at the cemento-enamel junction.

In other fields, junctional describes interfaces in materials science and electronics, such as p-n junctions in semiconductors, where the interface governs electronic behavior. The term is also used more generally to describe any interface-like region or connection point within a system.
