Sisäkorvaimplantti, commonly known as cochlear implant in English, is an electronic medical device designed to provide a sense of sound to individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from traditional hearing aids. The device bypasses damaged hair cells in the cochlea, directly stimulating the auditory nerve to transmit sound signals to the brain.

The implant consists of two main components: an internal part and an external processor. The internal component is surgically placed under the skin behind the ear and includes a receiver/stimulator and an electrode array inserted into the cochlea. The external component, worn outside the ear, contains a microphone, speech processor, and transmitter. The microphone captures sound, which is processed and transmitted wirelessly to the internal receiver, activating the electrodes.

The implantation process generally involves surgery and requires preoperative assessment, including audiological tests and imaging scans. Candidates for cochlear implants typically include those with limited or no benefit from hearing aids, often with a diagnosed sensorineural loss.
