Silmätulehdus, commonly known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a very common condition that can affect people of all ages.

There are several causes of conjunctivitis, including viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, and irritants such as smoke, dust, or chemicals. Viral conjunctivitis is the most frequent type and often accompanies a cold or other respiratory illness. Bacterial conjunctivitis is also common and can cause a pus-like discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites, and typically presents with itchy, watery eyes. Irritant conjunctivitis is a reaction to something getting into the eye.

Symptoms of silmätulehdus can vary depending on the cause but often include redness in one or both eyes, itching, a gritty sensation, excessive tearing, and discharge. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can also cause eyelids to stick together, especially after sleeping.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination of the eye. In some cases, a sample of the discharge may be collected for laboratory testing to identify the specific cause. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own within a week or two, and treatment focuses on relieving symptoms with cool compresses and artificial tears. Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic conjunctivitis can be managed with antihistamine eye drops, oral antihistamines, and by avoiding allergens. Irritant conjunctivitis is treated by removing the irritant and flushing the eye.

Preventing the spread of infectious conjunctivitis involves good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, avoiding touching the eyes, and not sharing towels or eye makeup.
