Silicatverf, or silicate paint, is a mineral-based, water-based coating used on mineral substrates such as brick, concrete, and lime plaster. It uses a potassium silicate binder that chemically bonds to the substrate, forming a durable, breathable film.

The binder is typically potassium silicate, also known as water glass. On application to a porous, alkaline substrate, the silicate undergoes a chemical reaction with available silica in the masonry to form a silicate network. This bond is mineral in nature and does not create a conventional plastic film. The coating remains permeable to water vapor while resisting liquid moisture to some extent.

Silicatverf is suitable for mineral masonry surfaces such as brick, concrete, lime plaster, and some natural stone. It is not designed for wood, metals, or substrates coated with non-mineral finishes. Substrates should be clean, sound, and free of soluble salts. New plaster should cure and damp surfaces should be avoided during application.

Application is typically by brush or roller, in multiple thin coats. Colors come from mineral pigments; the final finish is matte to slightly glossy depending on formulation. Because it binds chemically to the substrate, it is less flexible than organic paints and may crack on significant substrate movement.

Advantages include high durability, alkali resistance, and vapor permeability, with a relatively low environmental impact due to the mineral binder. Limitations include a limited color range, the need for compatible substrates, and the requirement to avoid applying over silicone- or acrylic-based coatings. Repairs are performed with additional silicate paint.

Silicatverf typically offers long service life in exterior and interior masonry applications, often several decades in favorable climates. Maintenance involves gentle cleaning and periodic re-coating as needed.
