Selfinitiator is a term used to describe an agent that begins actions or tasks based on internal motives rather than external prompts. In everyday use, it applies to people who set goals, plan steps, and carry them out without being told to do so. In technology, self-initiating systems act autonomously when they detect internal states or learned patterns that signal a task should begin.

In psychology and neuroscience, self-initiated actions are studied as voluntary behavior. They contrast with externally cued actions, which are triggered by stimuli. Neural correlates often cited include activity in the supplementary motor area and pre-supplementary motor area, as well as medial frontal and prefrontal circuits. The readiness potential, a slow buildup of electrical activity, has been observed prior to many self-initiated movements, though its interpretation is debated.

In education and work, self-initiated learning and self-directed projects are valued for fostering autonomy, persistence, and problem solving. In organizational settings, self-initiator traits can support entrepreneurship and proactive behavior, though they may clash with tasks that require coordination or external accountability.

In artificial intelligence and human–computer interaction, self-initiated or intrinsically motivated agents pursue goals driven by curiosity, novelty, or information gain, enabling exploration without external rewards. Implementations often rely on intrinsic reward signals or curiosity modules to drive action.
