Sebumetry is a non-invasive method used to quantify sebum production on the skin surface. It is commonly employed in dermatology and cosmetic science to assess oily skin, monitor changes over time, or evaluate the efficacy of products and treatments that affect sebum levels.

The most widely used technique is based on a sebum-measuring device that employs a transparent lipid-adsorbing tape, often referred to as a Sebumeter. The tape is pressed against a skin site, typically the forehead, nose, or cheek, for a fixed period. After exposure, the tape is placed in the device, which measures changes in light transmission caused by deposited lipids. The resulting reading is usually expressed in micrograms of sebum per square centimeter (μg/cm²), or as an index proportional to surface lipid quantity.

Standardized procedures emphasize preparing the skin by cleaning and avoiding cosmetics or occlusive products before measurement. Room conditions (temperature and humidity) and time of day are controlled, and measurements are often repeated at multiple sites with the averages reported. Proper technique ensures consistent pressure and exposure time to reduce variability.

Interpretation of sebumetry results reflects surface lipid amount rather than a direct rate of glandular secretion. Readings can be influenced by recent cosmetic use, sweating, atmospheric conditions, and skin cleansing. Consequently, sebumetry is best used for comparative assessments within a study or for tracking relative changes over time rather than as an absolute measure of sebum production.
