Sebumeter

The Sebumeter is a non-invasive dermatological instrument used to quantify sebum secretion on the skin. It is widely used in dermatology, cosmetic science, and product testing to assess sebaceous gland activity and the effect of treatments on sebum production.

Principle and measurement: A disposable transparent tape (Sebum tape) is pressed onto the skin for a standardized period (commonly about 30 seconds) to collect surface lipids. The tape is then placed into the Sebumeter, which measures the amount of light transmitted through the tape with a calibrated photometer. Because sebum darkens or blocks light, higher sebum yields lower transmission. The reading is reported as sebum amount per area, typically in micrograms per square centimeter (µg/cm²) after calibration.

Procedure and sites: Common testing sites include the forehead and cheeks, with strict standardization of environment, time of day, preparation, and tape application pressure to minimize variability. Repeated measurements can be performed to assess changes over time or in response to products.

Applications: Used in clinical and cosmetic research to evaluate sebum production, investigate acne pathology, test anti-sebum products, and study demographic differences.

Advantages and limitations: The method is rapid, non-invasive, and quantitative. Limitations include sensitivity to pressure, skin surface irregularities, ambient temperature and humidity, and the need for standardized procedures and calibration for cross-study comparisons. The Sebumeter is commonly manufactured by specialized instrument companies and is often used alongside other skin measurement devices in dermatological studies.
