ScreechOwl is the common name for several small owls in the genus Megascops, found in the Americas, with two widely recognized species in North America: the Eastern screech-owl (Megascops asio) and the Western screech-owl (Megascops kennicottii). These owls are nocturnal predators known for their varied vocalizations and compact bodies.

ScreechOwl individuals are typically 16–25 cm long, with a wingspan of about 45–60 cm and a weight ranging roughly from 120 to 240 g. They have a rounded head, a prominent facial disk, and relatively small ear tufts. Plumage varies by species and individual, with gray and reddish-brown morphs that provide camouflage against tree bark.

ScreechOwl habitats include woodlands, forest edges, and parks, and they commonly inhabit urban and suburban areas where suitable cavities are available. They nest in tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes and can use nest boxes provided by humans. They are nocturnal and hunt primarily from perches, preying on small mammals such as mice and voles, as well as insects, small birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Vocalizations comprise a range of calls, most notably a high-pitched trill or whinny used to defend territory and attract mates. Breeding occurs in late winter to spring; clutches typically contain 2–6 eggs, incubated mainly by the female for about 26–28 days. Both parents feed the young, and fledging takes place roughly 3–5 weeks after hatching.

Conservation status varies by region and species, but ScreechOwl populations are not generally endangered. Local declines can occur with habitat loss, while nest-site availability and urban forestry practices help support populations in many areas.
