Saturation values, or saturobservations, describe the intensity of color in an image or color model. The term measures how far a hue deviates from white, gray, or black, indicating how vivid or muted a color appears. It is a key attribute of tone and colorfulness.

In the HSV (hue, saturation, value) model, saturation controls how pure or washed out the hue is. Ranging from 0 to 1, 0 means no color (gray or black) and 1 means full color. HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) adopts a similar scale, with saturation indicating the degree to which color replaces gray. Both models separate saturation from brightness, enabling independent manipulation of color intensity.

Typical saturation values for web design often fall between 0.2 and 0.9, balancing visual appeal and readability. In printing, CMYK models store saturation implicitly; high saturation inks produce intense colors but may produce more color bleeding. Designers adjust saturation to achieve desired emphasis or to convey mood.

Digital imaging software lets users edit saturation through sliders or numeric fields. A 50‑percent increase can make a saturated image brighter, whereas a 50‑percent decrease results in a more muted tone. Many programs display saturation on a 0‑100 or 0‑1 scale for consistency.

Saturation values are also used in scientific contexts, such as measuring light absorption or chemical concentrations, where the term refers to how saturated a solution is with a particular component. However, that definition is distinct from color saturation.

In graphic design, different saturation levels help create hierarchy, contrast, and visual interest. High saturation draws attention; low saturation softens or ages the image. The saturation range therefore becomes a primary tool for effective communication.
