Sandstorms are meteorological events in which strong winds lift and transport sand-sized particles near the ground, reducing visibility and dispersing dust over large areas. When sand is the dominant component, the phenomenon is often called a sandstorm; when finer particles predominate, it is described as a dust storm. A related occurrence, a haboob, refers to a dense dust or sand storm generated by the outflow of a thunderstorm in arid regions.

Formation and conditions: Sandstorms form in deserts and other dry, loose-soil environments with sustained high winds. Intense surface heating raises atmospheric turbulence, allowing sand grains to be entrained by the wind. Through saltation and suspension, grains are lifted, collide with surfaces, and dislodge additional material, sustaining the storm.

Transport and characteristics: The appearance and reach of sandstorms depend on particle size, humidity, and atmospheric stability. They can produce dramatic skies and sharply reduced visibility, sometimes to a few meters. Particles may be carried within the boundary layer or at higher altitudes, potentially depositing sand and dust far from their source.

Impacts: Health effects include respiratory and eye irritation, with possible exacerbation of asthma and bronchitis. Transportation disruptions, including road closures and flight delays, are common. Sand deposition can damage machinery, solar panels, and infrastructure, while soil erosion and nutrient loss can affect ecosystems and agriculture.

Geographic distribution and drivers: Sandstorms occur most frequently in deserts and arid regions such as the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula, the Sahel, the Gobi, parts of Australia, and the southwestern United States. They are influenced by drought, land degradation, wind patterns, and regional climate variability.

Mitigation and forecasting: Weather forecasting, satellite monitoring, and ground sensors support early warnings. Land management, vegetation cover, windbreaks, and dust-control practices help reduce occurrence and exposure.
