A haboob is a type of intense dust storm that forms when a strong downdraft from a thunderstorm or powerful surface winds lift and transport dust and sand across arid regions. The term comes from Arabic habūb (هبوب), meaning wind gust or blowing, and is widely used in weather reporting in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of the southwestern United States.

Formation and characteristics: Haboobs typically arise from the outflow of a thunderstorm or from a strong pressure gradient that pushes dust into a large turbulent plume. As the gust front advances, a dense wall of dust can sweep across the landscape, reducing visibility to near zero within minutes and persisting along the leading edge. Winds along the front are often strong, and the dust may be transported for tens to hundreds of kilometers. The height of the dust cloud can reach thousands of meters, creating a darkened sky even during the day.

Impacts: Haboobs degrade air quality and can pose health risks for people with respiratory conditions. They create hazards for road and air travel, erode unprotected surfaces, damage crops, and can reduce solar power output. Onset is typically rapid but brief, with conditions clearing relatively quickly after the plume passes.
