The word combines ruptur, meaning rupture, with hopp, meaning jump, conveying the sense of a sudden advance of a fracture front or a sudden release of energy.

In practice, a rupturhopp refers to an abrupt change in the mechanical response during crack growth, such as a sudden drop in load-carrying capacity or a rapid increase in crack length. It is often associated with a jump in the energy release rate or a spike in acoustic emissions, and may be observed under tensile, bending, or mixed-mode loading conditions. The phenomenon is typically distinguished from gradual crack growth by its discontinuous nature and its ties to microstructural features that suddenly overcome barriers to propagation.
