Ruimteals is a fictional taxon of space-dwelling, eel-like organisms described in Dutch-language speculative biology and science fiction. The name combines ruimte (space) with al(s), a root used in imaginative descriptions of non-terrestrial life. In many settings, ruimteals are depicted as highly adaptable scavengers and predators that traverse debris fields and marginal atmospheres of asteroids, comets, and artificial habitats.

Physical characteristics: Ruimteals are slender, serpentine creatures with a flexible, segmented body that can bend to negotiate narrow crevices in microgravity. They typically show a continuous dorsal fin, lateral fins or frills for propulsion, and bioluminescent patterns that may serve for communication or camouflage. The head bears simple sensory organs and light-sensitive structures, enabling detection of faint radiation gradients and chemical cues.

Ecology and metabolism: They are imagined to rely on symbiotic microbes or onboard chemosynthesis to harvest energy, from inorganic substrates or solar radiation. In some depictions, ruimteals drift through radiation-rich environments, feeding on microbial mats coating dust grains or on organic detritus captured from solar winds. Metabolic rates are usually described as slow, supporting long lifespans in harsh conditions.

Reproduction and development: The literature presents varied life cycles, including fragmentation, colonial growth, or sexual reproduction with external fertilization. There is no empirical evidence for real specimens; ruimteals exist primarily in fictional or hypothetical contexts used in exobiology discussions and world-building exercises.
