Roostetamist is the act or process of roosting, primarily in birds and bats, though it can describe the resting behavior of other animals that settle in sheltered sites for sleep. In Estonian usage, the noun roostetamist derives from the verb roostetama (to roost) with the suffix -mist to form an abstract noun describing the activity.

Roostetamist involves how animals choose and use roost sites. Factors influencing site selection include microclimate (temperature and humidity), protection from predators and disturbances, proximity to food or water, and social tendencies. Species vary in their patterns: many birds roost singly or in small groups, while others form large roosting flocks; many bat species roost communally in caves, trees, or human-made structures. Daily and seasonal changes in roosting behavior reflect energy balance, reproduction, and weather.

Roost sites fall into natural and artificial categories. Natural roosts include tree hollows, rock crevices, and caves; artificial roosts encompass nest boxes, bat boxes, and perches in barns or urban buildings. In agriculture and urban wildlife management, providing appropriate roosting structures can improve welfare and reduce stress, whereas disturbance or poor roost design can increase disease risk or lead to displacement.
