Players describe their characters' actions through dialogue and often a set of rules governs the outcomes of these actions. Typically, one player, known as the gamemaster or dungeon master, improvises a narrative, describes the setting, and controls the non-player characters and challenges within the game world.

The core mechanic of most rollspelen involves players describing what their characters want to do, and the gamemaster determining the success or failure of those actions, often with the aid of dice rolls. This collaborative storytelling allows for a high degree of player agency and creativity. The genre encompasses a vast array of settings and themes, from fantasy and science fiction to horror and historical periods.

Rollspelen can be played in various formats. Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) are the most traditional, played around a table with rulebooks, dice, and character sheets. Live action role-playing (LARP) involves players physically embodying their characters, often with costumes and props. Computer and video role-playing games (CRPGs and VRPGs) are digital versions where the game's rules and narrative are managed by software.
