Robotsagents refers to autonomous robotic systems that act as agents capable of perceiving their environment, forming goals, and executing actions to achieve those goals with varying degrees of autonomy. They integrate sensors, actuators, and AI software to sense, reason, and act in physical or virtual environments.

Two main categories exist: physical robotagents, which operate as robotic platforms in the real world, and software robotagents, which run in virtual environments or cloud platforms and control software or digital objects. In both cases, agents may operate alone or within multi-agent systems, coordinating with others to accomplish tasks.

Typical architecture includes perception (sensing), cognition (planning, decision-making, and learning), and action (control and actuation). Interaction with humans or other agents is common, through user interfaces or shared control. Safety, reliability, explainability, and robustness are central design concerns, especially in high-stakes domains such as healthcare or transportation.

Applications span manufacturing automation, logistics, autonomous vehicles, service robots, surgical assistance, search and rescue, and virtual assistants. Research areas include multi-agent coordination, human–robot interaction, and learning from experience while addressing safety and privacy.

Challenges include ensuring safety and accountability, preventing abuse or manipulation, protecting privacy, and meeting evolving regulatory standards. Standards from organizations such as ISO and IEC address safety, interoperability, and ethics for robotic agents, while industry groups publish best practices for testing and certification.
