Ritüel is a term for a prescribed sequence of actions, often involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a culturally recognized context. Although closely associated with religion, rituals also appear in secular life and everyday behavior. Key features include formality, repetition, symbolic meaning, and a performative aspect that signals belonging and shared values.

Ritüeller follow a fixed structure, occur at specific times and places, and rely on commonly understood signs. They serve social and psychological functions such as marking life transitions (birth, marriage, death), reinforcing group identity, legitimating authority, transmitting beliefs, and providing a predictable framework for handling uncertainty or change.

Examples span religious rituals (prayers, sacraments), secular ceremonies (weddings, graduations, national holidays), rites of passage (adolescence or initiation), healing or cleansing rites, commemorations, and everyday rituals like morning routines or hospitality practices.

Scholars such as Durkheim, Turner, and Geertz have analyzed rituals as expressions of collective meaning, social structure, and symbolic systems. In modern usage, ritüel also describes ritualized behavior in workplaces, media events, and online communities, where formal sequences still function to coordinate action and articulate shared identity.
