Ristarlímhúðarbólga, also known as hypertrophic lichen planus, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin. It is a variant of lichen planus, a common skin disorder, and is characterized by its distinctive appearance. Lesions typically present as raised, thickened plaques that can be very itchy. The color can range from reddish-brown to violaceous. While lichen planus can occur anywhere on the body, hypertrophic lichen planus most commonly affects the lower legs, particularly the shins. It can also appear on the ankles and feet.

The exact cause of hypertrophic lichen planus is not fully understood, but it is believed to be an immune-mediated condition. Triggers can include certain medications, stress, or infections, though often no specific cause is identified. The condition is not contagious. Diagnosis is usually made based on the characteristic clinical appearance of the lesions. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other skin conditions.

Treatment for ristarlímhúðarbólga aims to relieve symptoms and reduce inflammation. Topical corticosteroids are often the first line of treatment, applied directly to the affected skin. In more severe or widespread cases, oral corticosteroids, retinoids, or phototherapy may be considered. Due to the chronic nature of the condition, relapses can occur, and long-term management may be necessary.
