Riskienkäsittely (risk management) is the systematic process of identifying, analyzing, evaluating and treating risks that may affect the achievement of an organization’s objectives. The concept is applied across business, public sector, health care, environment, technology and many other fields.

The core steps of risk management are as follows. First, risk identification records all potential events that could have a negative or positive impact. Then risk analysis assesses the likelihood of each event and the magnitude of its impact, often through qualitative or quantitative methods. In risk evaluation these results are compared to acceptance criteria to determine which risks require treatment. Risk treatment selects and implements measures to avoid, reduce, transfer or accept the risk. Finally, risk monitoring and review track the risk environment, the effectiveness of treatment measures and the emergence of new risks, and may lead to adjustment of policies or procedures.

Risk management frameworks such as ISO 31000, COSO ERM or enterprise risk management (ERM) models provide guidance on governance, culture and integration of risk management into decision making. Many jurisdictions also require risk assessment and mitigation plans for specific industries, such as financial services or critical infrastructure.
