Rheumatics is a general term referring to a variety of conditions that affect the joints, muscles, bones, and sometimes internal organs. These conditions are often characterized by pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. The term "rheumatism" itself is not a specific medical diagnosis but rather an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders.

Common types of rheumatics include osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease caused by the breakdown of cartilage; rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks the joints; gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals; and fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Other rheumatic conditions can include lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, and various types of tendinitis and bursitis.

The causes of rheumatic conditions are diverse. Some are due to wear and tear, genetic predisposition, autoimmune responses, infections, or metabolic abnormalities. Symptoms can vary greatly depending on the specific condition, but persistent pain and inflammation are common threads. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs. While many rheumatic conditions are chronic, treatments aim to manage pain, reduce inflammation, slow disease progression, and improve functional ability. These treatments can include medication, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and, in some cases, surgery.
