Retentores are sealing and retention components used in mechanical assemblies to prevent leakage, retain lubricants, and locate parts in relation to one another. In many engineering contexts, especially in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking industry, retentor or retentores often refers specifically to oil seals or lip seals placed on rotating shafts, though the term can also describe other retention elements in different regions.

Most retentores consist of an elastomeric seal element, sometimes backed by a metal or composite outer ring and, in some designs, a secondary lip or dynamic seal face. Common materials include nitrile rubber (NBR), fluorocarbon (FKM/Viton), silicone, and, for high-temperature or chemically aggressive environments, PTFE blends or fluorosilicone compounds. The choice of material and profile depends on operating speed, temperature, pressure, lubricant type, and the media being sealed.

Applications are widespread and include automotive engines and transmissions, pumps, compressors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and various industrial machinery. Retentores serve to retain lubricants, exclude contaminants, and maintain positional stability of shafts, gears, and housings. Proper installation—ensuring correct orientation of the sealing lip, adequate lubrication, and appropriate interference fit—is essential to performance and longevity. Precision tolerances and surface finish of mating parts influence seal life and leakage behavior.

Common failure modes include extrusion and wear of the seal lip, chemical degradation or swelling of the elastomer, improper fit leading to uneven loading, hardening from high temperatures, and damage from contaminants. Maintenance typically involves inspection for signs of cracking, hardening, or lubricant leakage, and replacement of aging seals to prevent costly down time.
