A restrike is a coin or medal that is produced from original dies at a later date than its initial issue. This often occurs many years, even centuries, after the original mintage. Restrikes are typically made by a mint or authorized body using the original coinage dies, or faithful reproductions of them.

The purpose of restrikes can vary. Sometimes they are created to satisfy collector demand for rare or historically significant issues that are no longer available. In other cases, restrikes may be made for commemorative purposes, to celebrate anniversaries or significant events, or even as a way to preserve the original dies.

Distinguishing a restrike from an original issue is crucial for numismatists. Collectors and experts often look for subtle differences in die characteristics, metal composition, striking quality, and edge treatments. Sometimes, mints will intentionally add a small mark or modify the edge to clearly identify a coin as a restrike. The market value of a restrike is generally lower than that of a comparable original issue, reflecting its later production date and greater availability.
