Remanufacturering, also known as remanufacturing, is the process of restoring used products to a condition that meets or exceeds the original specifications. It typically involves disassembly, cleaning, inspection, replacement of worn parts, reassembly, and testing to verify performance. The outcome is a product that carries the same or better reliability and warranty as a new unit, while using substantially fewer resources than manufacturing a new one. Remanufacturing is distinct from refurbishment, which may improve appearance or limited function, and from recycling, which primarily recovers materials rather than a complete functional product.

Common sectors for remanufacturering include automotive powertrains and components (engines, transmissions, starters), aerospace and defence parts, heavy equipment, industrial machinery, electronics, printers, and medical devices. Programs often rely on a supplier network that collects returned products, tests them, and qualifies cores for remanufacturing. Quality assurance and traceability are important to ensure that remanufactured products meet defined specifications.

Process steps typically follow a standardized workflow: assessment of returned items and core eligibility; disassembly; cleaning and inspection; replacement of wear parts with new or refurbished components; reassembly and calibration; final testing and certification; and labeling and distribution.

Remanufacturing conserves resources by extending product life, reduces energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and lowers demand for virgin materials. It can offer cost advantages to manufacturers and customers, support supplier resilience, and align with circular economy priorities.
