Reläet is the Swedish term for a relay, a device that uses a control signal to switch electrical circuits. In electronic and electrical engineering, a relay provides galvanic isolation between a low-power control circuit and a high-power load circuit while enabling or disabling the load path.

This allows a small current to control a larger current. Common contact arrangements include SPST, SPDT, and DPDT, with variants for normally open or normally closed configurations. Applications: used to control motors, lights, sensors, interlocks, and safety circuits in industrial automation, automotive systems, telecommunications, and building controls. Advantages: electrical isolation, signal amplification, and the ability to switch high currents with a low-power input. They can also provide fail-safe interlocks and simple logical functions. Limitations: moving parts cause wear, contact bounce can introduce chatter, switching speed is slower than solid-state devices, and coil power consumption is needed.

Design considerations: coil voltage, current, contact ratings, contact material, and environmental conditions. Careful selection ensures longevity and reliability. In modern practice, solid-state relays are chosen for speed and durability, while mechanical relays remain common where high inrush currents or galvanic isolation are required.
