Regelkasten, literally “rule box” in German, refers to a repository or collection of rules, heuristics, and guidelines used to support reasoning, decision making, and problem solving within a domain. The concept is related to, but distinct from, broader knowledge bases or note systems such as the Zettelkasten; a Regelkasten focuses on codified rules that can be applied to specific situations.

A Regelkasten typically stores explicit if-then rules, but may also include decision criteria, standards, and standard operating procedures. Each entry commonly records a rule name, its conditions or premises, the resulting action or conclusion, the rationale or evidence, the source, and metadata such as status, version, and last review date. Rules are organized by domain and linked to related rules to support chaining or conflict resolution.

The main purpose of a Regelkasten is to enable consistent, repeatable decision making and to make tacit knowledge explicit and reusable. It supports explainability by providing the conditions and reasoning behind each decision, aids training by codifying expert knowledge, and serves as a reference during process improvement and automation efforts. In practice, Regelkästen are used in education, engineering, business process management, and software development, where rule-based reasoning or automation is appropriate.

Lifecycle and governance are important: rules are created by experts, validated through testing or peer review, deployed in a controlled environment, and maintained to reflect domain changes. Challenges include rule proliferation, conflicts between rules, and obsolescence, which require governance, versioning, and regular maintenance. In software and business contexts, regelkästen often evolve into or are complemented by formal rule engines and business rule management systems.
