Codifying is the process of transforming a set of practices, rules, or information into a formal, structured code. It aims to reduce ambiguity by organizing content into a coherent collection that can be referenced and applied consistently. The term derives from Latin codex, meaning book or code, and in many contexts it denotes converting accumulated norms, statutes, or procedures into a statutory or standards-based code rather than leaving them dispersed across disparate texts.

Codification occurs across disciplines. In law, civil codes consolidate statutes and case law into comprehensive codes, as exemplified by the Napoleonic Code and various national civil codes. In healthcare and statistics, codification uses standardized codes such as ICD or CPT to classify diseases and procedures for reporting and billing. In linguistics and education, orthography and curriculum rules undergo codification to promote uniform usage. In information systems and software, codification translates knowledge into formal representations—taxonomies, ontologies, or rule sets—often enabling automated processing. The process typically involves defining scope, reconciling conflicts, drafting precise rules, and publishing updates; benefits include clarity, consistency, and easier automation, while challenges include evolving domains, exceptions, cultural differences, and maintenance costs.
