Rechtbankleden is a Dutch term that refers to the members or judges who sit on a rechtbank, the court of first instance in the Netherlands. A rechtbank handles civil, criminal, and tax cases, as well as related preliminary matters, at first instance. Within a rechtbank, cases are allocated to divisions such as civil, criminal, and tax, and rechtbankleden hear proceedings, determine facts where applicable, and render judgments in accordance with Dutch law.

The composition of a rechtbank typically includes several judges who work in panels or individually, depending on the case and division. In addition to regular rechtbankleden, courts may employ substitute judges to cover vacancies or temporary needs. The presiding judge or president of the court oversees administration and facilitates proceedings, while ensuring that procedures comply with due process and judicial standards.

Appointment and independence are core features. Rechters are professional magistrates who usually hold a law degree and complete judicial training. They are appointed by the government, often on the advice and recommendation of the Raad voor de Rechtspraak (Council for the Judiciary). Once appointed, they operate independently in deciding cases, free from political interference, and are subject to codes of conduct and disciplinary rules. They generally serve until retirement, with tenure protected by law and institutional practices to safeguard impartiality.
