Human bite marks often produce irregular bruising or contoured abrasions that reflect the dental arch, usually forming one or more arcs or rows of tooth impressions. Animal bite marks vary by species: dogs tend to create puncture wounds with surrounding contusion and tearing, while cats often produce deeper puncture wounds with significant local inflammation. Larger animals can cause broader lacerations and crush injuries.

Forensic analysis of bite marks involves documentation through photographs and measurements, dental pattern comparison, and sometimes three-dimensional imaging. However, the reliability of bite-mark analysis as sole evidence is debated, and it is typically supplemented with DNA testing or other forensic methods.

Medical management of bite injuries focuses on wound cleaning, assessment for deeper tissue damage, and prevention of infection. Prophylactic antibiotics are commonly considered for animal bites due to organisms such as Pasteurella species. Tetanus vaccination status should be updated as needed, and rabies risk evaluated in accordance with local guidelines. Prevention emphasizes avoiding situations that can lead to biting; prompt medical evaluation is advised for any bite injury to assess infection risk and structural damage.
