Origins of the term can be traced to theoretical and early implementation work around 2023–2024, where researchers explored how a single, adaptable protocol might unify diverse messaging patterns such as request–response, publish–subscribe, and streaming. Since then, various groups have produced proof-of-concept stacks and experiments, but no consensus or formal standard has emerged.

Design goals commonly attributed to Protocolafhank include modularity, security, scalability, and flexible routing governed by explicit policies. A typical architectural view presents a two-layer model: a transport envelope that provides confidentiality, integrity, and replay protection, and an application layer that negotiates capabilities, preferences, and access rules between peers. Usage scenarios cited in discussions include secure device coordination, distributed simulations, and orchestration of microservices.
