Design considerations include fit and comfort (particularly socket interface with the residual limb), weight, strength, durability, and ease of use. Engineers determine alignment, joint articulation, terminal devices (hands or feet), and cosmetic appearance. Materials commonly used are carbon fiber composites, medical-grade silicones, thermoplastics, and lightweight metals, with 3D printing enabling rapid customization of sockets and components.

Control and actuation span body-powered systems using cable controls to electronic and myoelectric control based on muscle signals, along with modern pattern-recognition and neural interfaces. Research in sensory feedback aims to provide tactile sensations, while osseointegration offers alternatives to socket-based attachment. Design also addresses maintenance, safety, and compatibility with rehabilitation protocols.

Societal aspects include access, affordability, and regulatory standards, as well as the role of clinicians, technicians, and user communities. The field evolves through iterative testing, user feedback, and advances in materials, sensors, and robotics, with goals of improving function, reducing fatigue, and enhancing quality of life.
