Priesthoods are organized offices or groups within religious traditions whose members perform rites, teach doctrine, and mediate between the divine and human communities. They arise in diverse cultural settings and differ in origin, eligibility, and authority.

In some traditions priesthoods are hereditary, as with the Levitical and Aaronic lines in ancient Judaism, where only certain families could perform sacrifices or offer blessings. In others, individuals are selected by religious authorities and ordained after training, with service duration varying from lifelong to term-based.

Typical duties include conducting worship and sacraments, officiating rites of passage, instructing adherents, maintaining sacred spaces, and managing liturgical calendars or temple resources. Hierarchical structures range from multi-tiered systems with high-ranking priests or bishops to decentralized or egalitarian forms. Access to priesthood may be restricted by gender, caste, or status in some traditions, while others ordain women or allow broader eligibility.

Examples include the Jewish Kohanim and Leviim; Christian clergy such as bishops, priests, and deacons in Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Protestant churches; Hindu temple priests and pandits; and Shinto kannushi. In many modern communities, debates about ordination, gender, and the role of priesthood reflect broader social and theological changes. In anthropology and religious studies, priesthood is analyzed as a social institution that shapes authority, ritual practice, and community life.
