In computing, multitiered architectures are commonly discussed as multi-tier or n-tier designs. The most familiar is the three-tier model, consisting of a presentation tier (user interface), an application or business logic tier (processing and rules), and a data tier (storage and retrieval). Two-tier and N-tier configurations exist, with more tiers used to distribute workload, improve scalability, and enhance security. Benefits include easier maintenance, clearer responsibilities, targeted scaling of components, and the ability to swap or upgrade parts of the system with minimal disruption. Drawbacks can include added complexity, higher development and deployment costs, and the need for robust inter-tier communication and security.
