Prepregbased refers to composite materials in which reinforcing fibers are pre-impregnated with a resin system and partially cured, forming prepregs. The resin content is precisely controlled, allowing for high fiber volume fractions and predictable processing. Final part manufacture requires additional heating and often pressure to complete the cure and develop the desired properties.

The term encompasses a range of materials using ferms such as carbon, glass, or aramid fibers, combined with thermoset or thermoplastic matrices. Epoxy resins are the most common matrix for aerospace and high-performance applications, while cyanate ester, bismaleimide, and phenolic systems are used for higher temperature or electrical requirements. Thermoplastic prepregs also exist, offering different properties and post-molding possibilities, though they generally require different forming and curing approaches.

Manufacturing and processing involve lay-up or automated fiber placement, followed by consolidation under heat and pressure in an autoclave or via out-of-autoclave processes. Vacuum bagging is often used to remove excess resin and air. Cure cycles depend on the resin system and target properties. Prepregs are typically stored refrigerated or frozen to maximize shelf life and must be acclimated before use to prevent condensation or premature cure.

Applications of prepregbased composites include aerospace structures, high-performance sporting equipment, wind turbine blades, and specialty automotive components. Advantages include high strength-to-weight, excellent dimensional stability, and low void content, while limitations center on cost, inventory and handling restrictions, and the need for controlled curing environments and specialized processing equipment.
