Pregnancy, also known as gestation, is the period during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman. Pregnancy begins with implantation of a fertilized egg and ends with the birth of the baby. A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, or 10 months, from the last menstrual period. This is measured from the first day of the woman's last menstrual period to the delivery of the baby.

During pregnancy, the woman's body undergoes significant physiological changes to support the growth and development of the fetus. Hormonal changes are crucial, including the production of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), progesterone, and estrogen. These hormones help maintain the uterine lining, prevent premature contractions, and prepare the body for labor and delivery. Common early symptoms of pregnancy include missed menstruation, nausea and vomiting (morning sickness), breast tenderness, and increased urination.

As the pregnancy progresses, the fetus grows and develops its organs and systems. The three main stages of fetal development are the germinal stage, the embryonic stage, and the fetal stage. Throughout pregnancy, regular prenatal care is recommended to monitor the health of both the mother and the developing fetus. This typically involves a series of medical check-ups, ultrasounds, and blood tests to detect any potential complications and ensure a healthy pregnancy outcome. Pregnancy concludes with childbirth, which involves labor and delivery of the baby and placenta.
