A powerboat is a boat that is propelled primarily by an engine rather than sails. Most powerboats use internal combustion engines, such as gasoline or diesel, though electric motors and hybrid systems are increasingly common. Propulsion methods include outboard motors mounted on the transom, inboard engines housed within the hull connected to a propeller shaft, stern drives (inboard/outboard), and jet propulsion that expels water to create thrust. Hull forms vary with purpose. Planing hulls rise onto a running surface to achieve higher speeds, while displacement hulls move through the water at lower speeds with greater efficiency and stability. Powerboats are commonly categorized by use and layout, including runabouts, sport boats, center-console and bowriders, cuddy cabins, and larger craft such as flybridge cruisers or sport fishing boats.

Common applications include recreation, fishing, watersports, and work or rescue roles. Performance depends on hull design, overall weight, engine power, propulsion type, and sea state. Design considerations also include stability, fuel efficiency, and ease of handling at different speeds.

Safety and regulation: operators may require licenses in some jurisdictions; vessels must carry required safety equipment such as life jackets, signaling devices, fire extinguishers, and navigation lights. Boats are registered and assigned hull identification numbers, and must comply with local and international navigation rules.

Materials and maintenance: fiberglass reinforced plastic is common, with aluminum, wood, or composites used in specialty vessels. Regular maintenance includes engine servicing, fuel and electrical system checks, prop and steering inspections, and seasonal protection from the elements.
