Postweave refers to finishing and embellishment operations performed after the weaving of fabric. It aims to alter appearance, texture, hand, colorfastness, and performance. The term is used in textile production and garment manufacturing, but its exact scope varies by industry and region.

In practice, postweave encompasses mechanical, chemical, and surface treatments applied to woven textiles after weaving. It distinguishes from pre-weave processes such as fiber preparation, spinning, and loom setup.

Mechanical finishing includes singeing, shearing, calendering, napping, and compacting to modify surface and drape. Chemical finishing covers bleaching, mercerization, dye fixation, softening, stiffening, and the application of water repellents or soil-release finishes. Surface treatments include printing, flocking, embossing, lamination, and heat setting. Embellishment such as embroidery is often considered postweave.

The selection and sequence of postweave processes depend on fabric type, end-use, and cost considerations, and are performed in dedicated finishing plants or integrated mills. Postweave finishing is central to achieving colorfastness, uniform hand, and the desired aesthetics in apparel, home textiles, and technical fabrics.
