Portabilitat is a term in Catalan that translates to portability in English. It denotes the property of being easily moved, transferred, or adapted to different contexts. In technology, portabilitat describes the ability of software, data, or hardware to function across different platforms, environments, or regulatory regimes.

Software portability refers to the capacity of a program to run on multiple operating systems or hardware platforms with minimal modification. Attaining high software portability typically involves using cross-platform languages and libraries, clean abstraction layers, and, increasingly, virtualization or containerization to isolate software from underlying systems.

Data portability is the ability to export and reuse data across services or systems. It is reinforced by open formats and well-defined interfaces, enabling users to transfer personal or business data without losing meaning. In Europe, data portability is supported by GDPR Article 20, which grants individuals the right to obtain and move their personal data between controllers.

Hardware portability concerns the ease with which devices can be transported and used in different settings, including size, weight, power requirements, and modularity. Portable devices often optimize energy efficiency and ruggedness to maintain usability on the move.

Portability also involves trade-offs. Highly portable systems may sacrifice performance, security, or cost efficiency, and achieving interoperability can require standardization and ongoing maintenance. In practice, portabilitat influences product design, software engineering, and policy development, encouraging modular architectures, open standards, and user-centric data exchange.
