Plaveiselcarcinoom, also known as squamous cell carcinoma, is a type of cancer that arises from the squamous cells. These are flat, thin cells that form the surface layer of the skin and line many organs and cavities in the body, including the mouth, throat, lungs, esophagus, and cervix.

In the skin, plaveiselcarcinoom often appears as a firm red nodule, a scaly, crusted patch, or a sore that doesn't heal. It can develop on any part of the body, but it is most common in sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, lips, and back of the hands. Risk factors for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma include long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, a weakened immune system, and certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

When it occurs in internal organs, the symptoms and presentation vary depending on the location. For example, lung plaveiselcarcinoom can cause persistent coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Oral plaveiselcarcinoom may present as a non-healing sore in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, or a lump in the neck.

Diagnosis typically involves a biopsy, where a sample of the suspicious tissue is examined under a microscope. Treatment depends on the location, size, stage, and extent of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health. Options can include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. Early detection and treatment generally lead to a better prognosis.
